Universal Food Packaging System 2019

Insight ≥ Food packaging is in a chicken-and-egg phase. The food industry is growing exponentially, and so is the environmental cost of packaging. Most businesses will not invest in sustainable formats because of higher costs and unproven packaging quality – but without scale, it is impossible to lower costs or design perfect packaging. Motherland decided to look for a solution. Inspired by shipping containers, Indian tiffins and the USB port, we set out to develop a universal packaging format that was economical, aesthetically pleasing, robust and of course, sustainable.

Motherland commissioned Swift Creative, Denmark to design concepts for a Universal Food Packaging system (UFP) – a standardised, sustainable, hot liquid-compatible and secure system with aesthetic appeal and customisable elements. As part of the process, Motherland and Swift interviewed leading packaging manufacturers to understand feasibility and scale. The results were astonishingly positive, and the costs of entry were surprisingly low. Motherland then worked with Swiggy’s innovation team to explore potential distribution of the system via their vast network of restaurant partners – we found strong in-principle agreement, but it was clearly not a business priority for most companies. The project is at a finished prototype stage, and it is our hope that we will deploy it with partners in 2020.
